The Effects of Insomnia on Your Health

A couple of years ago I had an accident which left me bed-ridden for a few weeks. Having a broken leg was no fun at all but it at least allowed me the time I needed to catch up on my reading, which not only passed the time but also kept me sane. Reading is one of life’s greatest pleasures and discovering new books and authors who can capture my interest and imagination brings me much joy. However, in recent times, the demands on my time have increased and my passion for reading has been put on the back burner.

However, since I used to sleep during the day, at night I would have difficulty dropping off and soon my whole sleep pattern was altered. My poor husband used to wake up and see me watching the TV at three o’clock in the morning! This led to further problems since I now started to suffer from insomnia and let me tell you that although I only had it for a couple of weeks, I have felt a lasting sympathy for those people for whom insomnia is a part of life. We take for granted the ability to fall asleep when we finally get to bed and to be deprived of this is upsetting and leads to health problems.

Sufferers of insomnia will tell you that they constantly feel tired and lethargic, with no energy for even the simplest tasks. They become irritable and seem to operate on auto-pilot and also have trouble focusing. Lack of sleep, when combined with other factors can lead to problems such as diabetes, high or low blood pressure and heart disease, all of which can be fatal if undetected or untreated. Sleeping problems can also lead to depression and a sense of despair and long time sufferers sometimes report suicidal thoughts.

Whilst confined to my bed I had little else to do but read, sleep or watch TV, although chatting with visitors and helping the kids with homework also killed a few hours. As a get well gift my husband actually went shopping and coming across a

Depression caused by insomnia can lead to a withdrawal from normal life, with the person becoming more and more reclusive, until they eventually lose contact with most people and end up losing their jobs, their friends and in some cases even their family members cannot cope and leave. If you are on of these unfortunate people, please contact your doctor or local support group, since help is available and can be effective for most cases.
